K-9 DOGS
What is a Police K-9?

Police K9s are highly trained working dogs that serve alongside law enforcement officers in
critical and often dangerous situations. These dogs are selected for their drive, stability, and
ability to perform under pressure, making them an essential part of modern policing.
Core Responsibilities:
-
Apprehension & Suspect Control: Safely subduing dangerous or fleeing suspects
-
Tracking & Trailing: Following human scent across various terrains and timeframes
-
Building & Area Searches: Locating hidden individuals in structures or open environments
-
Evidence Recovery: Finding discarded weapons or items linked to crimes
-
Detection Work: Identifying narcotics, explosives, firearms, or other target odors
-
Officer Protection: Acting as both a deterrent and a defensive partner

Dual purpose K9s are trained in both patrol and detection work, making them extremely versatile.
They are trained to:
• Apprehend suspects
• Track and locate individuals
• Conduct building searches
• Detect narcotics, explosives, or firearms
Dual Purpose K9
Single purpose K9s are trained in one specialized discipline, typically detection.
Common Roles Include:
• Narcotics Detection
• Explosives Detection
• Firearms Detection
• Human Remains Detection (HRD)
• Electronic Storage Detection (ESD)
These dogs are used in highly focused operations where precision and reliability are critical.
Single Purpose K9
In addition to traditional Police K9s, many departments now utilize Professional Therapy
Dogs—often referred to as comfort dogs—to support both officers and the communities they
serve.
Unlike patrol or detection K9s, these dogs are not used for enforcement. Instead, they are
specially trained to provide emotional support, stress relief, and trauma response in high-
pressure environments.

What They Do for Officers
Law enforcement officers are regularly exposed to high-stress and traumatic situations.
Professional therapy dogs help reduce the long-term impact of that stress.
They assist with:
• Reducing stress, anxiety, and burnout
• Supporting officers after critical incidents
• Helping regulate emotions following traumatic calls
• Providing a calming presence during long shifts or debriefings
These dogs are an important part of officer wellness and mental health programs.

What They Do for the Community
Professional therapy dogs also play a key role in building trust and supporting the public during
difficult moments.
Community Support Includes:
• Comforting victims at crime scenes or during investigations
• Supporting children or vulnerable individuals during interviews
• Assisting during crisis response situations
• Providing emotional support at community events

Role in Community Policing
Therapy dogs help bridge the gap between law enforcement and the public by creating positive,
approachable interactions.
They are often used for:
• School visits and education programs
• Public events and outreach initiatives
• De-escalation in emotionally charged situations
• Strengthening relationships between officers and the community

Why They Matter in Law Enforcement
Professional therapy dogs are becoming a vital part of modern policing by supporting both those
who serve and those they protect. Their presence helps:
• Improve officer mental health and resilience
• Provide immediate emotional support during crises
• Strengthen community trust and engagement
